Essay Questions

1. In the story "Where are you going, Where have you been?" Connie fights with her identity of being a woman or a teenager, how does this develop the theme in the story?

2. Explain what is happening in the poem Paps Waltz and compare it to one of the poems that we have learned about this semester.

Papas Waltz is a poem of get joy and laughter. There is a young boy who is looking back on a childhood memory about his father and himself dancing around the house. Some people have thought that this poem is about the father being abusive, but as the reader seeing how the poem develops there is no sign of abusive relationship in this poem. The father comes home one night drunk, he takes the boy and dances all over the house with him, the boy is having so much fun. The writer is showing how much love there is between the boy and the father, if there was any sign of abuse the mother would not be laughing at them going around like this, the only time she gets angry is where they knock the pots around in the kitchen.  Papas Waltz which I think is about love and a friendship between two people such as father and son comparing it too Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare the love in this poem is amazing. Shakespeare was an amazing writer the feeling in this poem and the imagery he lets you see just like in Papas Waltz you could picture the man and the little boy dancing around with one another and have some much fun the love between the two and how much the father wanted to spend time with him. In Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day? the image William shows us is the beauty of the woman or man he is writing about, "The Eye if Heaven" compares the person to the sun and the sun is one of the most beautiful thing on this earth. Just shows the love he has for this person and how beautiful he thinks this person is.

The Rain falls.

The Rain falls
Soundlessly on my soul
I grieve for what I've missed
But also for what I've endured
The pain, a slight pitter patter on my heart
Slowly drives me me insane
One day it will come,
The sweet journey which
Will take me away from this hell
And no more rain will fall
And the pitter patter will become silent
And I will be Happy.

First of all the poem is not about myself. In this poem there is a lot of Imagery.I see it being a young person going through a hard time in their life, and they are actually so depressed that they are thinking about taking their life. The poem is a about suicide and a cry for help but no one can help them. She thinks that when she dies that everything is going to better and she will be happy. But she maybe happy and feel like her soul is finally free of the pain but the family has to live with the fact that she is no longer here. And that she has taking her own life.

This poem is about a person that I was very close to in high school who in 2004 took her own life. And there was nothing that we could do for her. She is in a better place but it was very hard to live without her smile here.

Creative writing

My Haiku: Him

He is kind of tall
He likes the color purple
He is very cute

My Limerick: Poor Girl

There once was a girl named Danielle
Who threw a penny into a well
One big wish she did make,
but the well was a fake
oh, that poor girl named Danielle.

The influence these had on my writing was the haiku is about a special someone in my life. very serious. And my Limerick is just had a cute little rhyme about a girl named Danielle even though that is my name it does not have to be about me. The limerick was just kind of fun!

The New Guy

When we first met, we just walked
Did not know, but nervous as hell
We went for coffees, and just talked
And night quickly fell
Your Eyes as blue as the sky
Your smile so nice
I was feeling very shy
I thought this would come with a price
Nermit and Ribbit are your boys
They are really sweet
And quite a joy
They love their crickets for a treat
I hope this stays this way
I hope I never forget what to say.

I think that the form had a effect on my writing. It was very hard to come up with things that rhymed and how I truly felt. I did not think that writing a sonnet would have been this hard but it was. Anyways I think that my mood and tone was influences by the form trying to come up with things that fit together and how I felt about this new guy that is in my life. Even talked about his pets, which are very sweet and cute. They are red eye tree frogs. :) I did not use poetic language because it wouldnt of fit in there, would of looked weird in there.

Favorite Song

MARIANAS TRENCH LYRICS

"Skin & Bones"

Verus one
I lock the door
Turn all the water on
And bury that sound
So no one hears anything anymore
Mirrors lie to me, tell me you can see
Maybe you won't be able to recognize me now
I know you can feel all the things you steal
And you're taking, you're taking it

Chorus:
Feeling so easy
Make me skin and bones
I'm always on my knees for you
You break like it's even
When you're leaving it
Thin, where the hell have you been?

Verus 2:
Well sometimes it burns
Baby I'll wash it out
It all looks so big
Never mind, I don't feel anything

It only hurt a bit
I still feel like shit
And I think you won't be able to recognize me now
It's easier to quit
It's harder to admit and
You're pushing me, you're fucking pushing me!

Chorus:
Feeling so easy
Make me skin and bones
I'm always on my knees for you
You break like it's even
When you're leaving it
Thin, where have you been?

'cause you always win
And you... yeah!

Laughin' like it works
Bleeding like it don't hurt
Knock you off your feet
Even if you need me
Tear you apart and I hate how I need you

Feeling too easy, make me skin and bones
I'm always on my knees for you
Break like it's even
When you're leaving

It's too fucking easy, make me skin and bones
I'm always on my knees for you
Break like it's even
When you're leaving it
Thin, where have you been?

'cause you always win, and you always win, you always win
I will burn all this [x9]

First of all Marianas Trench is a Canadian band from Vancouver. They are one of my favorite bands, I have seen them three times in concert. Got crazy last year and decided to fly to Halifax and see them there, five months later saw them here.
This song is a beautiful piece of writing by Mr.Josh Ramsay (the lead singer).  For most of his life has suffered from depresstion, a drug addiction, also a eating disorder. This song Skin and Bones is one of the pieces from their "Fix Me" ablum that talks alot about Josh's past.
In the first verus they talk about the eating disorder. "Mirror lie to me, tell me you can see maybe you won't be able to recoginize me now, I know you can feel all the things steel, and you're taking it, You're taking it."(Josh Ramsay). This is just his way of say that he wants the mirror to show what he would like to be and not what he is. He feels that if his apparence is not good enough for him, or for anyone else. In the chorus he says that he finds it so easy to be bulimic and when he says he is always on his knees for you he is talking about being on his knees for the toilet. He really has a hard time adimiting to the fact that he had a drug attection and a eating disorder and he makes that very clear in this song. But his own mind is pushing him to adimit to it and come out and say that he has a problem. My favorite verus in this song is this one: "Laughin' like it works Bleeding like it don't hurt Knock you off your feet Even if you need me Tear you apart and I hate how I need you" because to me he knows that the drugs got that bad that he would laugh it off like I dont have a problem, also the bleeding like it dont hurt that he is feeling like he dont matter that much so pretending that it dont hurt at all but he is bleeding and hurting on the inside really. He hates that he needs this drugs and needs to make himself sick to feel like he is worthy. Josh has suffered through alot in his life but he is clean and has been clean for a very long time the only thing he does now is he drinks alcohol but what celebrity do not. This song I have choosen it because it is one of my favorites off the Fix me Album and it is a song that has alot of meaning.

Approaches

McMahan`s approaches that is used in our book that I find appealing to me are the Mythological and Archetypal approaches is one. I enjoy reading stories that keep you guessing what is going to happen next. I like to read stories where the character has challanges, because if they did not have challanges then the stories would be boring, and there would not be anything to keep you on the edge of your seat. Another approach that is appealing to me is the Historical approache, because it takes a look at how the original adience viewed the piece of work. Like Shakespeare I find that the imagery in some of his work amazing and then some of it confusing. Shakespeare has to be one of the greatest men in the history of literature writing. He is one of my favorite writers.

Fog by Carl Sandburg 1878-1967

The Fog comes
on little cats feet

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

This poem reminds me of Newfoundland, I think that is why I am choosing this one. The imagery in this poem is actually amazing. Fog comes on little cat feet, the way I look at this is that cats feet are quite and fog creeps in when it does roll in. Looking over harbor and city well we live in Newfoundland and where I live to the fog when it does come in it creeps in, it is silent and it just sits in the harbor and coves and looks over the city and when it is done doing its watching over us it moves on. I can picture a really grey foggy day in Newfoundland and relating it to this poem
